DAVID BOWIE has passed away from cancer at the age of 69.

His official Facebook page had this statement:

The BBC reports:

david bowie
David Bowie
was one of the most influential musicians of his time, constantly re-inventing his persona and sound, from the 1960s hippy of Space Oddity, through Ziggy Stardust and the Thin White Duke to his later incarnation as a soulful rocker.

Where before, artists and groups either evolved their musical style and appearance or remained unchanging, David Bowie seemed to be in permanent revolution.

Bowie was born David Jones in January 1947 but reinvented himself as David Bowie, in 1966, in order to avoid confusion with the Monkees' Davy Jones.

The artist's hits include Let's Dance, Changes, Space Oddity, Starman, Modern Love, Heroes, Under Pressure, Rebel Rebel and Life on Mars.

He was also well known for creating his flamboyant alter ego Ziggy Stardust.

The singer, who had been living in New York in recent years, only released his latest album Blackstar on his birthday last Friday.

The album, which includes just seven songs, has been well received by critics and was intended as a "parting gift" to the world, according to long-time friend and producer Tony Visconti.

Visconti wrote on Facebook: "His death was no different from his life - a work of art.

"He made Blackstar for us, his parting gift.

"I knew for a year this was the way it would be. I wasn't, however, prepared for it. He was an extraordinary man, full of love and life. He will always be with us."

Blackstar is on course to be number one this Friday, according to the Official Charts Company, with combined sales of more than 43,000.

EDITOR'S NOTE

But David Bowie was more than just a singer who's music defied genre. He was a man who defied boundaries as well.

Whether he was Ziggy Stardust, or Aladdin Sane, or the Thin White Duke, or simply David Bowie he was always much more than just a man, or an artist. He was the one true innovator, a visionary. Ever changing, ever redefining, ever pushing artist.  He was a singer, songwriter, producer, actor, a true Renaissance Man.

David Bowie was more than all that, David Bowie was just fucking cool.

Bowie was a chameleon, a 70s shaman fueled by drink, drugs, and wanton sexual appetite which, like his music, held no boundaries. And his artistry showed the genius that was the man. From albums like The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars, Space Oddity, Diamond Dogs, and Let's Dance, to movies like Labyrinth, The Prestige, The Last Temptation of Christ, to television shows like, The Hunger, Extras, to Broadway with The Elephant Man, to studying painting in Berlin in the late 70s. Bowie did it all.

Bowie did everything, and nobody else did it like David Bowie.
